Potential inclusion of Roma and Traveller history education

>

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Experts on Roma and Traveller Issues will convene in Toulouse, France on 11 to 14 June to work towards the potential implementation of Roma and Traveller history into school curricula.

“High on its agenda will be a draft recommendation on the inclusion of Roma and/or Travellers’ history in school curricula and teaching materials,” stated a press release from the Council of Europe.

History teaching has become one of the top priorities of the Council of Europe under the current French presidency.

The draft, if accepted and implemented, will include the production of educational materials, training for professionals, and the promotion of a website dedicated to the Roma Holocaust victims of WWII. Roma and Traveller groups have historically faced widespread discrimination and prejudice in Europe.

The Committee of Experts proposal intends to tackle anti-Roma and anti-Traveller prejudice through history education, “as history should foster a feeling of shared belonging and not nurture antagonisms,” the press release stated.

The committee will also review the execution of the Thematic Action Plan on the Inclusion of Roma and Travellers (2016-2019), and discuss data related to anti-Roma and anti-Traveller hate crimes across Europe.
