EU summit: Every Man Initiative calls for setting the course for Europe’s future

>

Vienna (OTS) – On June 23 and 24, 2022, the EU leaders will meet in Brussels. A fundamental decision is to be taken there: on whether there will be a constitutional convention. With support from 14 EU countries already, the Every Person initiative, which advocates for the expansion and enforceability of fundamental rights in the EU, is appealing to the European Council to seize this historic opportunity. Recent crises – most notably the war in Ukraine – clearly show that Europe is at a crossroads. Democracy, the rule of law, the common values and rights in the European Union are being put to the test more than ever. A fundamental decision is now imminent as to which path the EU will take in the future: For on June 23 and 24, the European Council in Brussels is expected to vote on whether to proceed to a constitutional convention, which is the basis for a change in the EU treaties.

The positive signals in favor of this have recently been accumulating: Many of the 49 recommendations adopted by the plenary of the Conference on the Future of Europe call for a constitutional convention. A clear commitment to this followed the handover of the final report to Roberta Metsola (President of the European Parliament), French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. And on June 9, the European Parliament – with a clear majority of 355 votes – adopted a resolution calling on the European Council to start the process of revising the EU treaties. These would have to be “urgently amended.”

Now or never: heads of state and government to take responsibility

The final decision now lies with the EU prime ministers and heads of government and will – also due to the call by the EU Parliament – in all likelihood be made as early as June 24. The Every Man initiative, which is campaigning for new and contemporary EU fundamental rights based on the idea of the German lawyer and writer Ferdinand von Schirach, is therefore once again making a clear appeal to the governments of the member states to vote in favor of a constitutional convention.

“We now have the historic opportunity to rethink Europe: as a unit capable of action with responsibility for the future. The governments of the EU member states must not shirk this responsibility. We need a Europe of the people – and the people want this Europe, as the already more than 267,000 signatures for our online appeal and well-known supporters from 14 EU countries clearly show,” says Bijan Moini, Chairman of the Every Man Foundation e.V.

Joint show of strength – together for Europe

In an exemplary, cross-border action, the Every Man Initiative ([www.jeder-mensch.eu] (https://www.jeder-mensch.eu/)) is urgently calling for people to vote for a constitutional convention: Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, Greece, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, France, Latvia, Ireland and Slovakia jointly appeal to set the course for the future of Europe now.
