On Cholesterol Day, the health company Sanofi promotes personal responsibility among the population: everyone should know his/her cholesterol level.
Vienna (OTS) – High cholesterol is a major risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. An important measure for prevention and treatment is the regular measurement and the knowledge of the own Cholesterinwert.
Vital in the right measure
It has been proven that we only absorb 20 to 30 percent of cholesterol through food.[1]
i_com/Documents/Desktop/AT_Presseinformation_Tag%20Des%20Cholesterins .docx#_bookmark0) The majority, on the other hand, is produced by the body itself. Yet cholesterol is not all bad, on the contrary. It is a vital fat that the body needs for cell walls, to form certain hormones or to produce vitamin D. Only too much cholesterol is harmful. It is deposited in the blood vessels and leads to calcification. As a result, the blood vessels become narrower and it is more difficult for the blood to flow through them. In the worst case, this leads to an occlusion and thus to a stroke or heart attack, both of which are among the most frequent causes of death in Austria.2
“Evil” LDL and “good”
In addition to smoking, lack of exercise, obesity and genetic predisposition, a main risk factor is too high LDL cholesterol. This “bad” cholesterol releases cholesterol into the tissues, while the “good” HDL cholesterol absorbs excess cholesterol from the tissues and transports it to the liver, where it can be broken down.
Regular control saves lives
The treacherous thing is that a high LDL cholesterol level often goes unnoticed for a long time; it causes no pain. So the fats can be deposited in the vessels over a long period of time without you noticing anything. That’s why it’s so important to know your cholesterol level and check it regularly, for example as part of your annual preventive checkup. Too high values can then be treated well and worse consequences averted.
