No fruit should be forbidden: Dole Sunshine Company asks His Holiness for absolution for the apple

>

Singapore (ots/PRNewswire) – The upbeat letter seeks to transform the apple from original sin to “original snack” and raise global awareness of the importance of good nutrition for all

Original sin – and the apple’s role in it – is undeniably the biggest PR disaster the fruit has ever faced. Today, in honor of International Fruit Day, Dole Sunshine Company (DSC) has written an open letter to His Holiness, Pope Francis, via La Repubblica, asking for absolution for the apple. DSC asks that the fruit be cleansed and instead celebrated as the healthy original snack.

For thousands of years, the apple has been subjected to denigration after Eve bit into the “forbidden fruit” in the Garden of Eden. In a light-hearted but hopefully fruitful way, the DSC wants to reverse that denigration and has asked Pope Francis to absolve the fruit of its misunderstood role in original sin. The letter – a humorous and unprecedented appeal to the Pope – is intended to stimulate a worldwide dialogue on the importance of fruit to a nutritious diet, focusing on the benefits of fruit and its global accessibility.

“We understand that asking for this change is a bold and provocative request, and of course we mean no disrespect to His Holiness or the Church,” said Pier Luigi Sigismondi, president of Dole Packaged Foods & Beverages Group. “We believe that if we can correct this misrepresentation of fruit, we can begin a new global narrative that focuses on its benefits and leads to new, healthier eating habits, because our goal is to provide good nutrition for all.”

The letter – published in the only newspaper Pope Francis says he reads – respectfully points out that while the apple was never mentioned by name in the Bible, this very fruit was vilified because it was wrongly associated with original sin. And in a world where there are clearly more sinful and decadent foods to reach for, the apple should no longer be considered a forbidden fruit. Rather, the DSC believes that fruit itself can play the heroic lead role, provide the impetus for change in the healthy eating discussion, and act as a driver for better nutrition worldwide.

The DSC concludes the letter with the following modest but urgent request to Pope Francis:

“For all these reasons, we humbly ask for the absolution that only you can give. A small change that can change the world. Would you consider changing the Bible? Just one small word. For example, replace “fruit” with an unhealthy food? Just a suggestion. If this request sounds a little too ambitious, that’s no problem. We would understand. Perhaps then a message of support would go a long way toward restoring the world’s confidence in our beloved fruits.”
