If there was a need for a strong symbol for the bursting of the European dream of peace, Mikhail Gorbachev provided it with his death. His name is forever inseparable from the greatest chance that this continent, senselessly soaked in blood for centuries, had. Without “Gorbi” there would have been no perestroika, no fall of the Iron Curtain, no German reunification, and probably no accession of Austria to the EU.
