Christoph Maschek succeeds as Finance Director of the City of Vienna
Vienna (OTS) – Today, Wednesday, June 29, 2022, Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig appointed the new head of the Magistrate and the new head of MA 5 (Finance). The current Finance Director, Dietmar Griebler (52), will be the new Magistrate and Provincial Office Director of Vienna as of July 1. He is succeeded in his current function by his former deputy in MA 5, Christoph Maschek (40). Mayor Ludwig presented the two top officials with their appointment decrees and thanked the previous Magistrate Director, Dr. Erich Hechtner (64), who is retiring after twelve years in the highest administrative function of the City of Vienna.
Mayor Michael Ludwig said at the ceremony: “In the past twelve years, the city administration has been able to decisively optimize its efficiency and has demonstrated its competence in dealing with various challenges and crises. All this and more is also due to Erich Hechtner’s work as Magistrate. For all this, I would like to express my sincere thanks. I wish the new Magistrate Dietmar Griebler much success and joy in his task, and I am already very much looking forward to a good cooperation!”
Magistrate Griebler thanked the mayor, his predecessor and all those present for the trust they had placed in him. He was aware of the great challenge and wanted to “continue the function as a link between politics and the Viennese population”. The Viennese can continue to rely on one of the best city administrations in the world.
Finance Director Christoph Maschek also announced that he would “do everything in my power” not to disappoint the trust placed in him: “I am looking forward to my new task and will perform it to the best of my ability.”
The outgoing Magistrate Erich Hechtner: “I was allowed to get to know many great people in the Vienna City Administration. What always pleased me was the great commitment, the contagious enthusiasm and the high sense of responsibility of the employees. Not for nothing is Vienna the most livable city in the world. This is something to be proud of.”
Numerous members of the provincial government as well as personalities from business and administration attended the farewell ceremony of the previous as well as the inauguration of the new Magistrate Director and the new Finance Director in the ballroom of Vienna City Hall.
Curriculum vitae Dietmar Griebler:
Dietmar Griebler completed his law studies in Vienna in 1993. A native of Vienna, he began working for the City of Vienna after his judicial year in 1994 in MBA 10. After a stint at MA 63 – Commercial Affairs, he moved to the then MA 4 – General Finance and Economic Affairs in 1997, from where he transferred to MA 5 – Finance in 2001. From 2003 to 2005, Griebler completed the post-graduate university course “International Executive MBA Public Management” at the University of Salzburg Business School. In 2006, he took over the management of the Presidential Department of the Mayor and in 2008, he additionally took over the function of the Division Head for Decentralization of the Administration of the City of Vienna. From January 2013 Dietmar Griebler headed MA 5 – Finance, since June 2013 also as Finance Director of the City of Vienna.

Christoph Maschek was born and raised in Vienna. In 2006, he graduated from the University of Vienna with a degree in law – in 2007, he joined the City of Vienna. His professional career accompanied him through the Municipal District Office 4th/5th District, MA 63 – Gewerberecht, Datenschutz und Personenstand and MA 5 – Finanzwesen, where he was Deputy Head of Department since April 2018. Since March 6, 2020, he has also held the position of division head for fundamental matters of funding in the Magistrate.
