ÖVP consumer protection spokesman: need up-to-date infrastructure so that there is no damage to business and living locations
Vienna/Klagenfurt (OTS) – “We must use all technical possibilities for the production of renewable energy. Further supply routes – whether for electricity, heat or gas – must be expanded without further delay in order to be prepared for all threats and future developments,” ÖVP consumer protection spokesman MP Peter Weidinger stated yesterday evening in a summit meeting in Klagenfurt with electricity network experts and other MPs from other parliamentary groups.
“Massive efforts are needed at all levels, – of politics, but also of the economy and the population – to master the energy transition,” Weidinger continued, adding that this would offer great opportunities, especially for Carinthia.
In response to the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, efforts are being made at European and national level to phase out Russian natural gas in the medium and long term and to diversify Austria’s natural gas supplies. However, the switch to natural gas from other countries of origin is associated with increased costs for delivery to Austria or with increased natural gas prices. “In order to avert the resulting additional costs for the Austrian economy and consumers, compensation for the additional costs is to be made possible by means of subsidies. For the diversification of the purchase of natural gas as well as for the conversion of plants to alternative operation by means of other energy sources, funds amounting to 100 million euros will therefore be made available annually in each of the years 2022 to 2025,” Weidinger referred to a bill already passed in the National Council.
“Our goal is to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas and to support companies to convert,” concluded the Carinthian mandatary. (end)
